The REF542plus can transmit both absolute and incremental rotary position data. The new interface is designed to provide reliable and cost-effective point-to-point communication between the encoder and many common types of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). The new interface uses the Synchronous Serial Interface (SSI) standard to report absolute rotary position data to the PLC over an RS-422/485 communications link. At the same time, the encoder can transmit a series of electronic pulses – up to 16,384 pulses per revolution – as the shaft rotates. They provide accurate real-time measurement of rotational speed (thanks to the incremental outputs), while also providing access to absolute rotational position data in response to controller requests. Other new features of these encoders include enhanced diagnostic reporting via housing-mounted LEDs or SSI connections, and an optional housing-mounted pushbutton that allows the operator to reset the zero (reference) position of the absolute position reading.

The REF542plus allows the user to enter and record data in hexadecimal, ASCII or binary format and logs data from serial instruments (PIC microcontrollers, RFID readers, PLC’s, dataloggers etc.). The software collects data from devices connected to the PC’s com port via RS232, RS422, RS485 and Modbus. The terminal emulator allows the user to troubleshoot serial port connections. Automation servers also have full AST (Alarm, Schedule, Trend) functionality. As such, they are suitable for efficient and powerful DDC on the main system, as well as for monitoring and controlling essential building functions and energy management on distributed properties.
