The 8312 allows alarm contacts to be added during the safety process without special installation or configuration. Unlike many other plug-in relays, the SRM is a forced-guide relay that avoids the possibility of contacts being stuck in both the normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) positions, and avoids potential problems caused by issues such as soldered contacts.The SRM is constructed using safety-related relays with forced-guide contacts that are monitored and mechanically wired to the same armature as the output contacts.

The 8312 can be used as part of a safety instrumented system (SIS). While most safety relays are housed in plastic enclosures, the SRM is housed in a durable and rugged “universal” aluminium DIN housing and can be mounted on either 32 mm G-type or 35 mm Top-Hat DIN rails. a key design consideration for the SRM was its ease of use. It features front-panel visual diagnostics, with three LEDs reflecting current input, output and power status. It can also be mounted in an SIS with minimal wiring.
